Iridium: relaunching in style with a new constellation of 81 satellites
Iridium, one of the world’s leading satellite mobile telecommunication service providers, has announced the development of a new constellation of satellites, awarding the 2.1 billion dollar contract to Thales Alenia Space, an Italian-French joint venture.

The new constellation, known as “Iridium Next”, will comprise 81 satellites (72 in orbit and 9 for backup) and will replace the first one which was launched twenty years ago. The technological advances in Iridium Next meet the demands of today’s market.

It provides broadband mobile communications and data transfer to anywhere in the world: even the Antarctic, the Amazon rainforest or the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The first satellites will be sent into orbit in 2015.

The Iridium transmissions are conveyed by the earth stations and are therefore integrated into the existing networks. The American company is therefore planning an additional 800 million dollars of investment to boost the terrestrial infrastructure and help spread its services ever wider.

Intermatica is the Official Service Provider and offers a wide range of Iridium satellite products and services.
